Design Philosophy and Construction Concept
The D 870 was conceived with the aim of creating a simple and functional yacht, both in terms of use and handling, as well as in construction. The project explores the combination of two marine plywood building methods: panel construction and strip planking.
The use of epoxy resin allows the plywood to be fully impregnated and its natural porosity saturated, creating a true wood-epoxy composite structure. The result is a rigid, strong, and durable hull.
This approach led to a simple and modular design that minimizes human error during construction and enhances the working experience for the builder.

Structural Validation and Sailing Tests
The yacht was extensively tested in a wide range of conditions to validate both structural strength and naval architecture. Feedback proved positive not only in conditions close to the operational limits for a boat of this size, but also in typical daysailing scenarios, confirming the soundness of the overall concept.

Hull, Keel and Transportability
The design features a hull length of 870 cm and a beam of 225 cm, equipped with a lifting bayonet keel that allows a maximum draft of 195 cm, which can be raised for road transport.
The yacht can be trailered using a standard mid-size car. Transport operations are further simplified by a removable rudder blade, which can be extracted by releasing a single bolt.
The hull weight is 500 kg, to which 600 kg of ballast (keel and lead bulb) are added. The design accommodates a crew of up to five people, corresponding to approximately 300–400 kg of additional load.
Deck Layout, Cockpit and Rig
The deck layout is designed for ease of use, even with a reduced crew. The flush deck configuration forward creates a large, unobstructed area that can be used as a sunbathing space.
The overall design emphasizes a very large cockpit, accounting for more than 50% of the yacht’s length, combined with an exceptionally clean deck.
The cockpit is fitted with benches that comfortably seat up to six people, keeping them clear of running rigging. The mast, equipped with two sets of swept spreaders at 30°, eliminates the need for a backstay and supports a 7/8 fractional rig with a slender sail plan and reduced overlap, enhancing efficiency and ease of handling.
